Crawling out of my tent in the early Mongolian morning, I look across a vast steppe covered in a colorful carpet with intricate patterns. There are chives growing, as far as the eye can see and they’re all in flower. Literally millions of mauve and white heads bobbing gently in the morning breeze. A delicious, heady scent of herbs permeates the air as I move around our Land Rover, searching for my red tin mug.

We’re camped on the edge of an enormous open valley. It’s like a giant basin, rimmed with dark towering mountains…..sentinels in the early morning light.

Mongolia, the Land of the Great Blue Sky is indeed living up to her name on this crystal clear day.

“People pay squillions to wake up to a 360 degree view like this” I think, as I take in the beauty which lies before me and languish in my chair, sipping my steaming coffee. It’s an idyllic scene and as I absorb the smells, sights and sounds, I wonder how long it will be till the wind wakes from her nightly slumber and begins to roar.

I think back to two nights ago when we were camped in the Khongoryn Els Sand Dunes. Our nice little dome tent with the “cute little vents and lots of netting for great airflow”…just didn’t cut it! A wind from hell blew in during the night and hammered us for over six hours. I felt as though someone was standing over me with a giant pepper -shaker, spilling it over my face all night. I’m sure the wind speed was over sixty kilometres per hour because most of the time my tent was so bowed in that it was touching my face. I could hear the gusts coming through the dunes, like roaring waves or is it…a screaming banshee? I spent most of the night cowering into my sleeping bag to keep the sand from getting in my eyes, nose and ears.

I had some apprehension about heading to the end of the Earth, at the bottom of the globe where the nail supports it, to a land covered in 98% ice that has never supported any mammals or humans. Antarctica is the driest highest, cleanest, windiest and coldest of all continents, so cold even the polar bears stay away.

I escorted a group of 31 adventures, my most globally astute group ever. Getting the 7th continent stamped in their passports was on their bucket list. The collective motivation was also the amazing wildlife photography opportunities and we had a few experts among the group. Their passion began to dissolve my trepidation so I adjusted my enthusiasm to go boldly. Packing was my greatest challenge ever with dozens of thermal layers not to exceed 50lbs. December is austral summer with tolerable temps in the 30’s to 40’s. We were circumnavigating the scenic peninsula which the staff calls the “banana belt” for its mild weather. It was however, the winds that can top 100 mph and rough seas that I feared most.

Hurtigruten was an excellent line. They included pre and post cruise days in humid Buenos Aires with a city tour, Tango Show and giant juicy steaks. We then flew 3 hours south to Tiera Del Fuego and spent time enjoying its capital Ushuaia along the shores of the Beagle Channel. I dined on king crab and shopped for gifts of all things penguins.

Ever since the invention of steam engine, trains have come a long way from just a means of transportation to fun train vacations. Now engines that are more powerful are able to pull the trains through steep slopes and greater heights while taking the passengers on a thrilling and adventurous journey. Crossing speeds that were never thought of before and going through mountainous and rocky terrains that were considered impossible to penetrate, trains can provide you vacations that will take your breath away. Irrespective of age and other limitations, most of us love a train trip. Your vacations start the second you board the train.
